I am certain I was born in the wrong era. I’ve always felt a bit out of place in this modern time. My friends who know what a strong female presence I can be tell me that I would have been miserable before women’s lib but I like to think I might have ushered it in a bit sooner!
Every day I have the privilege of having people trust me to sell their possessions and it is an honor. This last week was exceptional as I had the pleasure of consigning an Art Deco era vanity and set of twin beds for a lady here in Huntington Beach. The set was owned by her great grandmother and she acquired it when she was a teenager. These pieces have such character and the attention to detail speaks to me in a way that no modern, mass produced thing ever could! I can only imagine sitting in front of this vanity getting ready for a glamorous night out in a beaded dress with a feathered headband and I can only imagine how dapper my charming husband would look in 1920’s garb. Maybe it was seeing the latest rendition of The Great Gatsby that’s got me waxing nostalgic for an era I can only imagine. It could even have been the walk down memory lane I took with my wonderful father-in-law the other day. He loaned the shop his grandmother’s beaded Gatsby Style dress and shared lots of photos from that era.
Though I’m sure that there were many drawbacks to life in the 20’s and 30’s I sometimes wonder if we haven’t gotten too far away from the charm of doing things at a slower, though occasionally roaring, pace! Either way, it’s always exciting to see what will come through the door next!
